13 Oct 2016
The 110km Morupule Coal Mine general manager’s annual Charity Cycle is expected to kick off on October 23 in Serowe.
The race, sponsored by Stanbic Bank to the tune of P200 000, will start from Boiteko-junction, along Orapa road, pass Paje and Khama Rhino Sanctuary and back.
The race which is open to both Morupule Coal Mine employees and members of the public has four categories, 110km, 60km, 30km and junior categories with registration ranging from P200 for 110km and P100 for junior category.
Handing over the sponsorship during a press conference at Morupule Coal Mine, Stanbic Bank relationship manager, Rebone Diloro commended the country’s sole coal mine for undertaking an initiative to help charity organisations and less privileged members of the community.
He also commended the mine for operating in a stabilised environment under a sustainable economy for the past 23 years as well as ploughing back into the community. Receiving the sponsorship, Morupule Coal Mine human resource manager Tom Mongale thanked Stanbic Bank for supporting the race for the past four years.
He said through this cycling challenge, the mine has managed to help the less privileged and changed the lives of many people for the better.
Through this initiative the mine built a house for a person living with disability in Palapye in 2015 and in addition donated P100 000 to Sehonou Primary School.
In 2014 it donated P75 000 for construction of a stream of classrooms for students living with disability at Ratsie Sethako Primary School as well as building a house for an orphaned family at Matlhakola village.
Mongale further called on the community to support this initiative by taking part in the race, adding that cycling is a healthy, low impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
He said Morupule cycling club believes that riding to work or shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with everyday routine.
The club was formed in 2009 with the aim of improving the level of fitness and wellbeing of employees and members of the community. Even though Morupule Cycling Club is operating under Morupule Coal Mine, it is open to both employees and members of the community.
The race is expected to attract over hundred cyclists. ENDS
