Placement of signs goes with planning policies

12 Oct 2016

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural development Ms Botlogile Tshireletso has told Ntlo Ya Dikgosi that the decision to place road signs in a village has got a lot to do with planning policies of the road authority and the government.

Responding on behalf of the Minister of Transport and Communications she said road planning is a multi dimensional activity and the applied policies should take into consideration other organisations and the varied road users.

Ms Tshireletso noted that one of the most important considerations in putting up road signs is road safety adding that road safety is often divided in to three constituent elements being exposure (increases with conflicting movements) , risk (increases with traffic volume )and consequence (increases with speed).

She noted that the A1 road goes through Palapye and has a high volume of traffic with a lot of access roads into the main road and thus necessitating reduced speeds to minimise consequences of any road mishaps.

She said there are lot of developments along the A1 road in Palapye that stretches up to 20km/h.

She stated that this explains why in Palapye the 80km/h and the 60km/h speed limits were placed 10km from the town.

Ms Tshireletso noted that should the developments continue the speed limits may be moved further.

Kgosi Galeakanye Modise of Tswapong region had asked the minister on what informed the decision to place the road signs in a village and further explain why in Palapye the 80km/h and the 60km/h speed limits were placed 10km away from the town. ENDS
