Mmatli encourages teamwork among residents

11 Oct 2016

Molepolole South MP Dr Tlamelo Mmatli has called on residents of Lekgwapheng to speak in unison and engage government on development projects earmarked for the village. He said some projects were shelved or delayed due to financial meltdown.

Speaking at a Kgotla meeting in Lekgwapheng in Molepolole on Monday (October 10) he said water scarcity had been a concern for a while in the area and the water corporation was aware of the situation. He said the other concerns were allocation of land and connection to national electricity grid.

Another concern in the village was absence of street lights leading to criminals terrorising people.

Dr Mmatli said he was shocked to hear of incidents of sexual abuses of orphaned children but however appreciated the formation of group which aimed at assisting orphans.

Earlier, a Village Development Committee representative told the gathering that some orphans were being abused, engaged in prostitution hence the formation of an empowerment group to give them a second chance in life.

The area Member of Parliament also said construction of sewerage and waste water system disposal in Molepolole was critical in making the village attractive to investors.

He said the village was thus unable to attract construction of big development projects such as the much needed police station, setting up of firms and other major infrastructure development, noting that the absence of such facility had impacted negatively on the growth of the village despite being the biggest village in terms of population.

On other issues he implored residents to support Kgosi Kgari III’s efforts to curb substance and drug abuse among school pupils where chiefs in Kweneng District have been paired with schools to monitor and report such behaviour.

He said the initiative could be successful with collaboration from the public.

He also informed residents that together with Molepolole North MP Mr Mohammed Khan they met President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama over arrays of issues such as unemployment among the youth, retrenchments, water shortage and Molepolole development in general.

Residents were also informed about bills and policies passed by the last parliament seating such as amendments to increase numbers of specially elected MPs to six, increasing ministerial posts and assistants by two. ENDS
