Discipline support got Karabo where he is

Being a good parent can be a difficult and daunting task, but at the same time can be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience.

While some people depend on their instincts to be good parents, some depend on the holy book to guide them into grooming responsible leaders of tomorrow.

For the 42-year-old Masego Sibanda, mother to the world class sprinter, Karabo Sibanda, who specializes in 400 metres, anyone can have a child and call themselves a parent but a real parent is someone who puts that child above their selfish needs and wants.

Raising three children was not always an easy task for her as she had to put her interest second to that of her lovely two boys and a girl. Karabo is the second born after her elder sister Kefilwe and younger brother Sekhanyise.

As a God fearing mother Sibanda believes that as a good parent, the first thing one must do is teach children the truth about God’s word. Also, it is her conviction that discipline and love are integral parts of being a good parent.

Sharing her role towards the successful journey of her son’s career in sports with BOPA recently she said Biblical truth should be the foundation of homes as it can mould children into responsible and hardworking adults.

“Children who are raucous lack direction and self-control but I am happy that my son Karabo who is now on the spotlight and still under our guidance obeys our instructions,” she noted with a smile on her face.

She prides herself with his son noting that he is what he  is  today because of discipline, guidance and parental support. She reminisces that she taught Karabo that worshiping God should be constant instead of being reserved for Sundays only.

While some of his age mates are already abusing alcohol and drugs Karabo is exceptional and still obedient to his parents

The mother revealed that going to church shaped Karabo’s future and thanked God and the St. John Church leadership for playing a critical role in the success of her son.

She further revealed that during Karabo’s upbringing, she was over protective of him, not because she wanted to punish him but wanted him to live his dream and become a man of integrity with a bright future.

“I loved him so much and I wanted him not to forget his background after realising that his sporting career is heading for stardom,” she said. Sibanda further revealed that her motivation worked tremendously in her son’s life as whatever she said, Karabo took it seriously.

She said although the boy was not good academically she made sure he balanced both sports and his studies. She tried by all means to ensure that sports do not overshadow his academic studies.

During his formative years Karabo hated losing in track as this was evidenced by his vow to never participate in athletics while he was in primary school until he watched the 100metre super star, Usain Bold scooping gold medals the 2012 Olympics. This according to Sibanda made him change his mind and rekindled his love for the game.

Although they were challenged economically this Olympian’s mother said she was determined to ensure that Karabo realises his dream and stamp his talent in the world of athletics.

For his part, Karabo appreciated his parents support and guidance of church for his success. The young athlete is still under the guidance of his parents regardless of his age, stature.

“Before I go to the tracks I always go to church to get my blessings so that I perform well,” he said.

He promised that he would work hard and ensure he brings home a medal come 2020 Olympic Games.

He also urged the youngsters not to give up on life but rather strive to move forward despite challenges they may encounter.

He said they should turn challenges into opportunities and live their dreams noting that anyone could be a star. ENDS
