The northern traffic deputy divisional commander, Senior Superintendent Otsile Baodirile has implored drivers to use the correct registration numbers on their vehicles at all times.
In an interview with BOPA, Senior Superintendent Baodirile said some drivers use the fonts that are not legible making it difficult to identify vehicles involved in traffic law violations and other crime.
He said failure to use proper registration numbers attracts a penalty of up to P400. Senior Superintendent Baodirile further said of recent, some numbers have not been in accordance with the Traffic Act Regulation 6.
He explained that such numbers had a bigger space between the letters and numerals than the 6mm that is stipulated in Traffic Act. Senior Superintendent Baodirile said they will continue to charge the drivers and will eventually charge registration number dealers.
He explained that the dealers are given specification of how the numbers should be made and failure to comply with the specifications will amount to a criminal offence.
On a different note, Senior Superintendent Baodirile said the traffic police officers are concerned about the increase in the number of offences such as failure to obey road signs, markings and drunken driving.
The police chief advised drivers to observe set speed limits such as 60 and 80 km/h. ENDS
