Preparations are underway at Gxhabara Primary School to organise a welcome ceremony for Botswana 400m runner, Karabo Sibanda.

Sibanda who made his maiden appearance at this year Rio  Olympics 2016, is a former student at Gxhabara and will have a welcome ceremony at the school on September 23.

The event is held under a theme, United and Proud; Nurturing Sports Excellence.

District leadership including Maun East MP, Mr Konstatinos Markus, district commissioner, a representative from Botswana National Sports Council and the business community are expected to grace the occasion.

In an interview, the public relation officer from department of education in North West, Lesley Kehitile said the ceremony was meant to honour Sibanda for his great contribution in sports development.

He also revealed that the school found it fit to have the ceremony in honour of its former student who has Maun on the map.

He said they wanted him to trace his roots noting that during the ceremony, Sibanda would have an opportunity to share his sports career with the pupils.

Kehitile said although Sibanda and his team from Rio Olympics were welcomed at Gaborone, his school also wanted to extend the love and appreciate his good performance at the Olympics.

Sibanda was the only Botswana athlete who qualified for the 400 metre final at the just ended Olympics but did not manage to bring home a medal.
