20 Sep 2016
Lorato Disabled Persons Society was launched by the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mr Eric Molalale in Mabule recently.
Officially launching the society and a 150km sponsored walk from Mabule to Good Hope, Mr Molale said disability was not inability and added that people living with disability could actually do better than those without disability.
Mr Molale indicated that the funds raised from the walk would assist in the building of centres for people with disability in both Good Hope and Mabule.
He added that government supported efforts made by people with disability to develop themselves, citing the centres in the two villages.
Coordinator of People with Disability in the Office of the President Mr Thomas Motingwa commended the Lorato society's efforts despite perceptions that people with diability could not do what able bodied persons could do.
Mr Motingwa said disability was not planned for and that anybody could find themselves in a disability situation in some point in their lives.
The chairperson of the society Mr Blom Lekoma indicated the purpose of the walk was to sensitise the community and nation of the role people with disability played in the community as well as the nation.
He also said the walk was aimed at encouraging coordination between the leadership and people with disability for the development of the community as well as the nation; and that they had a role in the growth of the economy.
The centres will house a vocational training, an agriculture unit as well as a physiotherapy centre . ENDS
