Safety nets dent district budget
14 Sep 2016
Southern District councillors learnt Monday (September 12) that the district was experiencing an increase of beneficiaries on social safety nets.
The district council chairperson, Mr Mephato Reatile stated during the weeklong council meeting that this financial year (2016/17) 15 466 beneficiaries were assisted with social safety nets compared to 15 193 in the 2015/16 period.
“This indicates an increase of two per cent across the entire district. The increase is linked to various factors associated with high unemployment, persistent drought and lack of graduation from poverty eradication programme by beneficiaries,” he told councillors.
Mr Reatile said further that a total budget for relief of destitute persons vote in the last financial year 2015/16 amounted to a little over P32. 4 million compared to P25.3 million the previous year.
He said the 2015/16 expenditure amounted to P38.4 million which was an over expenditure of P6 million.
He said however, that with this final year budget, expenditure was likely to skyrocket by P28 million.
Mr Reatile therefore mentioned Moshupa sub and Kanye administrative authority were in the red. ENDS
