Serowe BOT50 committee, in conjunction with Serowe Extreme Bikers club, on Saturday (September 10) ignited momentum for the independence celebrations.

The 20-day count-down to September 30 attracted spectators from different walks of life, taking all down the memory lane.

The programme was a mixed bag of goodies entailing traditional games and modern sports games.

Despite cancellation of the event’s motorcade on the 11th hour, that did not dampen the attendants’ mood.

In his welcome remarks, Serowe deputy tribal authority, Kgosi Serogola Seretse, commended all who attended the event.

He said the attendance was an indication of their preparedness towards celebrating the country’s 50th independence.

Kgosi Seretse said turning 50 years was a milestone on its own and added that having the inaugural motor race was also historic.

The deputy chief expressed confidence that the event will grow in the years to come.

He also applauded parents who saw it fit to bring their young ones to be part of the event as involving them afforded them an opportunity to tap from their parents thereby applying what they have learnt in future.

The BOT50 local organising committee chairperson, Gaeelwe Kennekae, said they saw it fit to partner with Extreme Bikers Club as two heads were better than one. The chair said the aim of sensitizing residents about the forthcoming independence activities had been attained given the number of people who attended the countdown.

Kennekae said that the bikers’ involvement has not only created the hype about the envisaged independence celebrations but has afforded the club a platform to be known.

The chair said such races have socio-economic benefits and said it was their hope that the residents will take advantage of the beckoning opportunities.

Extreme Bikers Club official Bikie Morebodi said that they were encouraged by the turnout. Morebodi who was speaking on behalf of the club’s president said that their club was still in its infancy despite efforts to promote the sport.

He said the intention was to hold the event annually despite financial constraints.

Morebodi said some of their challenges include low membership which affects execution of club activities.

The speaker revealed that the sport was expensive as one should be able to buy a motorbike and attire to form part.

Morebodi said they were encouraged by the mother-body Botswana Motor Sports’ involvement in the event and said such indicates that they are on the right direction and destined for greater things.

Apart from the race, attendants were treated to traditional song and dance, games such as koi among others. ENDS
