Volleyball independence cup in offing

12 Sep 2016

Talks are ongoing between Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) and Mascom, the annual sponsor of Capital BMW Motors Independence Volleyball Cup to secure sponsorship.

Responding to a questionnaire from BOPA,  BVF president Daniel Molaodi said negotiations are at an advanced stage, bringing hope to the volleyball fraternity that the much anticipated tournament will be played.

Molaodi said they will release dates and all the logistics for the tourney as soon as the deal has been sealed.

“Since this year marks the important year to every citizen of this country in regards to BOT50 celebrations, our negotiations are expected to bear fruits as our talks with the sponsor is ongoing,” he noted.

He stated that Capital BMW Motors and Mascom have played a vital role in the growth of volleyball in Botswana and many consider it as one of the excelling sports codes in the country.

The BVF president said Capital BMW Cup ensures that their players gain exposure and earns them the opportunity to get national team call ups.

It also serves as the Zone VI qualifiers and every year the sponsor has dug deep into the coffers to increase the prize money.

He said they have seen the likes of Tracy Chaba, Tebogo Sejewe and Dipolelo Chizhala being scouted from the zonal, continental and African club championships because of companies such as Capital BMW Motors and Mascom.

The defending champions of the cup are Kutlwano men and Mafolofolo ladies but looking at the pacesetters of the ongoing Mascom League, especially in the men’s section, Police VI has shown vast improvement and a formidable side to clinch the cup.

Even though Zone VI secretariat has not confirmed the dates and country to host the club championships, it is likely to be Namibia in December.

Zone VI comprises Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

As for the ongoing Mascom National Volleyball League, the chairperson of the Competitions Commission  Ndibo Lebala and his team will have to work round the clock to slot the tournament in between the second round league fixtures.

The second round kick-started two weeks back in venues such as Serowe College of Education indoor sports hall, Lobatse New stadium sports hall, Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and Jwaneng Sports hall. ENDS
