Pavetta leaves farmers counting loses
06 Sep 2016
Mahalapye Sub-district has lost 440 cattle to Pavetta harborii (Legonyana) poisoning, Central District Council chairperson Mr Peter Williams told the full council on Monday.
Mr Williams said consequential conditions of drought reduced the ability of animals to select plants during grazing, thus resulted in the cattle consuming the poisonous plant .
He appealed to farmers to supplement (feed) their livestock and continue with the strategies that mitigated the impact of drought.
Concerning the campaign of engaging private inoculators for vaccinating against Anthrax and Black quarter diseases, he said 75 private inoculators had been engaged this year, compared to 48 last year in the same period.
This time around, he said rabies vaccination for dogs and cats was included in the private inoculators’ package.
Also he said farmers with more than 100 cattle were allowed to secure vaccines and perfume the vaccinations themselves
However, the challenge was that most farmers did not deliver or supply information on the vaccinations to veterinary officers. ENDS
