05 Sep 2016

Itumeleng primary school held a march on Friday in Block 3 to commemorate BOT50 celebrations.

When giving welcome remarks Ms Audrey Pule, school head at Itumeleng Primary School said they took a walk around Block 3 to show the community that they were celebrating independence and also picking litter to show students they should love their country by keeping it clean.

She further said the pre –independence was to give their students chance to celebrate because some of them will not be able to go to the National Stadium during Independence Day celebrations.

She explained that the event was to teach students about what happened before independence and to share with them information about the elders who contributed to the independence of this country.

Ms Pule highlighted that they have taught their students that Botswana was a poor country but after independence the country was developed because of the mineral resources that were found in the country.

For her  part, Ms Louis Ngope, the chief education officer of the South East region said it was important that they were celebrating pre independence because by the end of September students will be able to understand the importance of BOT50.

“Your theme also is very appropriate,”BOT50 and beyond” because you are the young people of Botswana and in another 50 years when Botswana will be celebrating 100 years, I want to believe most of you will be here because you are still young ,’’she said. She added that Botswana was a prosperous and peaceful country and that Batswana were fortunate to be celebrating 50 years.

However, she thanked the founders of this country for coming up with principles such as democracy, self-reliance, unity, Botho and development.

She also encouraged the students to keep up the spirit of Botswana. ENDS
