Culture human rights should not clash - Masunga
04 Sep 2016
President of the Customary Court of Appeal in the north, Kgosi Christopher Masunga, says culture should not clash with human rights.
Speaking at Francistown culture day on Saturday, Kgosi Masunga said before independence, dikgosi used to make laws that guided people.
However, he said no documentation was there for the subsequent generations to learn from.
He noted that nowadays the younger generation had lost respect for their culture as they never consulted or involved the elders who knew cultural procedures.
Kgosi Masunga said people continued to cohabit, which usually resulted in conflicts as couples fought for various reasons.
He said the increase in cohabitation corresponded with the increasing cases of assaults and passion killings.
Kgosi Masunga said one of the problems of cohabitation arose when one of the couple died; the relatives of the deceased would take away all the property regardless of whether the two accumulated together.
A member of Francistown BOT50 Local Organising Committee, Andrew Seeletso, said the objective was to bring the different cultures found in Francistown together as part of BOT50 activities.
He further said the culture day would become an annual event in the northern city, adding that the residents should keep their city clean in preparation for the independence and beyond.
The Francistown BOT50 chairperson, Kebaabetswe Bogatsu encouraged the residents to be proud of their culture and use it to unite them. ENDS
