Council head thumbs up projects

30 Aug 2016

The Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) projects are reportedly doing well in the South East District.

The district chairperson, Mr Phenyo Segokgo reported this during a full council session on Monday.

He said ESP projects in Tlokweng and Ramotswa sub councils were progressing well without major hiccups.

Mr Segokgo appreciated the crafting of Gaborone-Boatle road into a dual carriage under ESP, saying this would ease traffic to and from Gaborone.

In addition, Mr Segokgo said land servicing of Seuwane which fell under ESP was progressing accordingly. He said land servicing would start with the industrial side and later the residential.

On other projects in the district, Mr Segokgo said the construction of Ngotwane Bridge was almost complete and they were hopeful that the bridge would be officially opened before the end of September.

Furthermore, he said plans were underway for the South East District storm water reticulation master plan.

Therefore, he was hopeful that before the beginning of the rainy season, something would be in place to lessen the impact of storm water in the district.

On other issues, South East District chairperson encouraged Batswana to make sure that this year’s independence celebrations become a success.

He said people across political divides should put their differences aside and celebrate the milestones that the country has by far achieved.

The chairperson also noted that schools results for the second term showed a slight improvement in the district.

He said primary schools results showed an improvement from 63.3 per cent to 77.3 per cent while junior schools recorded 29.5 per cent from 25.9 per cent and senior schools showed a decrease from 20.3 per cent to 19.7 per cent.

During comments, Councillor Kgabo Mabotseng said there was need for councillors to visit and give motivational talks in schools in their areas.

Councillor Abram Dilo said it was regrettable that consultations for Seuwane started in Otse, yet the area fell under Mogobane.

He said Mogobane had been deprived of Botswana Police College which was supposed to fall under Mogobane but was under Otse.

Councillor Dintle Kereng complained that the mandate of Village Development Committees in Ramotswa expired in August last year, but there had not been any elections up to date. ENDS
