Gaolathe Challenges Batlokwa to Turn Heritage into Opportunity

Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe has challenged the Batlokwa to use their rich cultural heritage as a catalyst for economic development while preserving their identity.
Speaking at the Mafifatshwana Cultural Festival, Gaolathe said Batlokwa ba Moshaweng carried a history of endurance and survival, urging the community to recognise the value of its heritage, including Marothodi’s archaeological history and Batlokwa silversmithing.
He said stories, language and land carried both cultural and economic value, calling on Batlokwa to embrace innovation and position themselves for investment.
Gaolathe said young designers, chefs and filmmakers could turn Batlokwa history into opportunities, including through digital storytelling.
Meanwhile, Kgosi Puso said culture was not merely inherited but had to be preserved and passed on to the next generation. He said traditional leaders were custodians of land and culture and envisioned Tlokweng becoming Botswana’s first smart model village while retaining its cultural identity.
The Royal Batlokwama Development Trust and Batlokwa Royal Council have been established as part of efforts to strengthen community development and cultural preservation. ENDS
