Khama attends SADC Summit

President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama is in Swaziland for the 36th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for August 30-31.
A news release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation states that the summit was preceded by the Council of Ministers meeting from August 26 - 28.
The release says the regional leaders will discuss issues affecting the Southern African region.
These include, among others, the political and security developments in the region; progress regarding economic integration agenda; the existing challenges related to poverty alleviation, drought, food insecurity, energy shortages, pandemics such as HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis as well as Malaria.
President Khama, who is the current SADC chairperson, is expected to pass the baton to King Mswati III of Swaziland.
During the one-year chairmanship, Botswana did not only spearhead regional efforts aimed at addressing the political and security challenges in Lesotho, but, among other things, convened three ministerial workshops seeking durable solutions to challenges related to food insecurity and poverty alleviation, inadequate energy supply and water scarcity.
