WUC tackles water challenges
24 Aug 2016
Water Utilities Corporation is considering connecting Paje, Mabeleapodi and Mannatlhoko to North South carrier water channel as a long term measure to shortage of water supply.
When addressing Serowe Sub -council recently, council chairperson Mr Mpho Kooreme said the Sub -district was faced with monumental challenges of dilapidated water reticulation network that resulted in numerous breakdowns in some parts of Serowe and villages of Mabeleapodi and Paje.
The villages, are currently supplied from Botswana Power Corporation wellfield through a reciprocal water exchange agreement.
The corporation also intends to connect Mogorosi village scheme to Setekwane boreholes to augment water supply in the village. Currently the demand for water overwhelms the current supply, according to the council chief.
The corporation is reportedly faced with challenges of abuse of sewerage system and illegal connections.
“Members of the community throw waste such as clothing and other household waste into manholes resulting in environmental pollution due to sewage overflowing from blocked sewer lines,” he said.
However, WUC has completed Malatswae desalination plant , telemetry installation at Mmashoro, secondary dosing unit for the gravity line at Serowe hill tanks site amongst a host of projects to curb water shortage in the sub district.
He however, informed the sub council that water situation was not that gloomy. He said that reliability of supply had improved with minimal disruptions experienced during occurrence of pipe bursts.
Such improvements are attributable to availability of surface water for livestock consumption and reduced vandalism of water pipes amongst other factors. Ends
