Battle against poverty rages

24 Aug 2016

The chairperson of Moshupa Sub-district Council Mr Benjamin Mogodi updated councillors on the implementation of poverty eradication programme in the Sub-district and its progression.

Addressing council meeting on August 23 Mr Mogodi said they have a total of 221 projects funded under the Non-Agricultural Alternative package with 210 projects operational.

He said the remaining 11 were not operating due to various reasons such as loss of interest in projects by beneficiaries while some had incomplete packages.

He urged councillors to encourage members of their communities to treat these as opportunities intended to enhance their livelihoods.

“It is with great pleasure to inform you that despite the challenges, there are 27 successful projects under this package. Lives of beneficiaries have changed drastically, four beneficiaries have built themselves houses, seven  bought livestock whereas one has started a Kiosk'', he said.

He said the rest had opened savings accounts and they were able to sustain their families with monthly groceries, toiletry and school expenses. The programme has created employment for 224 people.

He further said since inception of the programme, 488 applications had been approved for small stock package, adding that out of that 188 had been implemented and the remaining not yet implemented due to limited funding.

He said under the leather work package 13 had been approved with nine projects completed and three partially implemented. Ends
