Independence day moment of introspection
22 Aug 2016
Member of Parliament for Jwaneng/Mabutsane, Shawn Ntlhaile has implored Batswana to use the 50th independence celebrations as a moment of introspection for the journey that started in 1966.
He was speaking after a sponsored walk organised by Mabutsane Sub-district to raise funds for the celebrations over the weekend.
“The 50th independence celebrations mark our journey from when we first took independence as a country. Let us all embrace these celebrations and give them our all,” he said.
He noted that this was a moment for Batswana to reflect on their achievements as well as evaluate on how other things could be improved.
He said the peace and tranquility that reigns in Botswana should be one of the things to celebrate because other countries are marred by conflicts and wars.
Furthermore, Mr Ntlhaile commended Mabutsane residents who participated in the walk, saying this showed their level of commitment to their country.
He said that the fact that they put aside their weekend plans and social commitments to participate in the event was a reflection of the unity that Batswana are known for.
The Mabutsane sub-district BOT50 committee secretary, Ms Gaogakwe Gabaatlholwe said the sponsored walk was part of a series of activities that they planned to raise funds to augment the government’s budget to celebrate the 50th Independence Day.
She said some of the activities include horse race, court of injustice, Miss Culture pageant, Culture Day, Disco, lunch, family fun day and mokolokotwane.
She, however, decried poor support from the residents and the business community, which she said was the main challenge facing the activities. Ends
