BOT50 goes local in golden jubilee celebrations

Coordinator of BOT50 committee, says they are in possession of awarded tenders amounting to over P5 million of local companies who are failing to deliver, most of which were awarded in May, June and July 2016.
Speaking during a press brief regarding the preparations for Botswana's golden jubilee celebrations, Charity Kgotlafela said it was worth noting that the independence day could not be postponed and as such they had to come up with a plan on going forward.
Regarding procurement, she said last year BOT50 floated tenders in the government gazette and encouraged Batswana to respond to tenders.
“This move was very important for BOT50 since we had made a decision that procurement will be done locally and in parts. We want to commend those companies that are meeting their obligations,” she said.
Kgotlafela further noted that BOT50 made a decision to use local talent in all their activities across the country and this move was geared towards nurturing and growing local talent.
“We have closed our borders and have not engaged any artists from outside the country,” she said.
On being quizzed on how much money from the initial budget of P100m meant for celebrations had already been used engaging local companies, Kgotlafela could not answer, indicating that her committee would be engaging the media on weekly updates.
She said various celebratory plans were on track and BOT50 was proud that through their various activities had put Botswana first and unearthed a substantial number of Batswana from diverse locations across the country to participate in the celebrations at the National Stadium in Gaborone.
Districts celebrations will commence on September 25 with a religious service followed by a gospel concert in the evening,” she said, also adding that it would be Christian led activities.
“This will be followed by various exciting activities that include music comedy, poetry festivals, and football tournaments,” she said. Ends
