The director general of Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), Ms Rose Seretse, says there is need to intensify education on the dangers of corruption in order to ensure that Botswana remains the least corrupt country.
Launching Moshupa Anti-Corruption Club on August 18, Ms Seretse said fighting corruption was everyone’s responsibility.
She said ministerial anti-corruption committees were established to help formulate corruption prevention plans and policies.
She said corruption should be dealt with, without sympathy or compromise.
Ms Seretse also pointed out that “corruption concerns everyone and not only those who handle funds in their respective jobs”.
She urged Moshupa residents to be committed to anti-corruption.
She said anti-corruption was key tenet in the good governance agenda hence the need to take a step needed in the fight against corruption and economic crime.
Ms Seretse emphasised the need to set the pace for collaboration and networking in the war against corruption and economic crime.
“DCEC is anchored on operational elements of investigation, public education and corruption prevention that are commonly used the world over. One of the DCEC’s primary mandates is to examine practices and procedures of public bodies and the private sector in order to identify opportunities conducive to corruption and in its capacity secure beneficial changes that would deter it,” she said.
She noted that the institution, through its strategic vision, sought to rally the nation towards a corruption free society noting that the establishment of corruption prevention committees managed to give considerable momentum to the fight against corruption and economic crime.
“Corruption as one of the paramount national concerns cannot be won over by the DCEC alone, a resolute collaborative effort by the members of the community and private sectors ensuring that all their efforts bear fruits”, she said.
She said DCEC remains committed to assisting Batswana to take the fight against corruption and economic crime to the next level and urged residents who attended the day to seize and engage their intellect and passion for the fight against corruption. Ends
