18 Aug 2016
Kgosi Daniel Mathiba of Mmathethe has implored Bangwaketse to donate cattle for the country’s Jubilee celebrations slated for September 30.
He was speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by Minister of Agriculture Mr Patrick Ralotsia on August 17.
Kgosi Mathiba advised that if Bangwaketse cannot donate their cattle for independence celebrations some may be consumed by drought.
He implored residents to up the game in preparations for the country’s golden jubilee noting Bangwaketse are known to be innovative people.
He said the first irrigation scheme in the country was done by Bangwaketse and Kanye was the first village to have a water reticulation system, therefore it is upon this background that he implores them to continue igniting innovation.
He said Bangwaketse contributed a lot for laying a foundation to the development of the country’s constitution and other development agendas, therefore he said looking at their prowess they should be doing more than enough to ensure success of independence celebrations.
He thanked the government for supporting its people meet the daily needs of life but noted that the former is over doing it.
He implored the youth to look after livestock as stray cattle destroy ploughing fields.
He decried people who do not look after cattle and those who vandalise fences noting it is very expensive for arable farmers to maintain such fences.
Kgosi Mathiba said Dikgosi should be given powers to collect stray cattle and sell if no one claims them.
For his part, Kanye Administration Authority chairperson Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela said agricultural issues have direct impact on people’s lives.
He said they collect stray cattle and keep them in designated kraals in Gasita after which they are sold after three months.
Mr Dibeela said they will be selling stray cattle in Gasita on September 7, 2016 after which the council will come again and collect in Kanye. ENDS
