Indiscipline needs parents intervention

17 Aug 2016

Tonota MP, Mr Thapelo Olopeng, says pupils’ indiscipline requires parents partnership with teachers.

Mr Olopeng said this when responding to a concern raised by residents during a kgotla meeting on August 16.

He said pupils at Dukwi Junior Secondary School were not performing well and there were complaints about their bad behaviour.

The parents, therefore, made plea to their legislator that their children be moved from the school to another as they were of the view that there was no proper monitoring of students at the school hence results continuing to decline throughout the years.

Mr Olopeng, also Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, emphasised that students were not teachers’ responsibility alone and to address the bad behavior presented by students, it should begin at home.

He noted that parents should see to it that they instilled discipline on their children and guide them to understand the importance of education which is offered at no cost by the government.

He further added that across the Tonota region, he has received complaints from schools and village leadership that Parents Teacher Associations (PTAs) were not operational as parents never pitch for meetings at the schools let along just make visits to their children’s respective teachers to get firsthand information on their students’ behavior and performance. He therefore noted that moving the students to other schools was not a solution.

The Village Development Committee (VDC) chairman, Mr Tebogo Khunou, appreciated the Presidential Housing Appeal initiative, noting that they had many houses being built for under privileged members of the community, a thing he said added to the development of their village.

However, he decried the way government programmes were being dispersed to them, saying they were unable to get them because those who were supposed to serve them did not do so. ENDS
