Roving torch approaches final journey

17 Aug 2016

The national roving torch, which is in its final days of a tour of the whole county since its launch last year in September is continuing its journey in Kweneng.

So far in the three villages it has toured in the Letlhakeng Sub -district, residents have described it as a national icon that will hopefully brighten their villages and help Botswana to be a united nation ahead of its jubilee celebrations.

In Monwane village, Kgosi Kgari Sechele of Bakwena appreciated the gathering in large numbers of residents, and said  the torch signified what the citizenry has done for itself since attaining self-rule.

He said in this era where Africa is known for conflicts that arise from political and tribal disagreements among others, it was a good thing that Batswana are some of a few nations that could  still negotiate and willingly hand leadership powers to others.

“The fact that we have been handing this roving torch smoothly and peacefully from village to village is a direct indication of our mature democracy, that we have been handing political power to those deserving without any conflict,” he said.

The elderly Kgosi Ketlaamoreng Masono of Monwane also indicated that for a person of his age to be seeing the roving torch for the first time in his life also indicates that the country comes afar and matured.

“Many years back there was scarcity of both water and food, and if you are very observant you will realise that many villages around Botswana have been established or even named after a water source, which indicated its preciousness in those times of scarcity,” he said.

In Serinane, Kgosi Malang Galeatle also appreciated the unity that the torch will hopefully bring among Batswana, and said such a spirit should continue even beyond the silver jubilee celebrations.

The roving torch will tour the Letlhakeng sub district until the beginning of next month. ENDS
