Human trafficking global concern

16 Aug 2016

The deputy manager- human trafficking in the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security Mr Leslie Nasha says human trafficking remains a global phenomenon.
In his presentation to the Ghanzi District sub district extension team on August 15, Mr Nasha said millions of people continue to be handled as mere commodities and exploited in many ways through the evolving trade of human trafficking.
He noted that while  government is aware that human trafficking in person is taking place in Botswana, the depth, breadth and scope of this act is yet to be understood across the nation. He indicated that only through research and engaging with stakeholders that government could  be able to determine and verify information and data on human trafficking in Botswana.
Mr Nasha noted that the meeting with Ghanzi district extension team was a deliberate effort by the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security to further disseminate the Anti-Human Trafficking Act as well as build capacity with them as key stakeholders.
He noted that cooperation amongst key stakeholders on matters of human trafficking bear fruit as far as combating trafficking in persons and ensuring the protection of victims is concerned.
In efforts to combat trafficking in persons, government of Botswana enacted the Anti-Human Trafficking Act which gives effect to the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons.
Mr Nasha said the Act which prescribes that the Human Trafficking Committee shall “lay down strategies and measures for the prevention and suspension of trafficking in persons,” will not be possible if the Act is not widely dispersed and adapted by all stakeholders. ENDS
