Youth involvement in democracy vital
16 Aug 2016
Officials of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) have expressed concern over lack of youth’s voice on democracy related matters.
Speaking during Party Liaison Committee meeting recently, South East District IEC principal elections officer Ms Selemogwe Kwarambe expressed disappointment over the fact that effort to get youth involvement continued to be unsuccessful on a number of meetings convened by her office.
She stated that lack of youth commitment on issues of democracy was a cause for concern and promised to convene a similar gathering with the hope that the situation will improve.
She however went on to highlight her office’s intention to ensure youth involvement through formation of youth clubs in some schools to get their involvement at a tender age, in order to discuss the importance of voting.
Meanwhile Mr Carthage Modise an election officer expressed gratitude over the fact that individuals appeared to have gained knowledge about the voting processes arguing that the dwindled number of spoilt ballots at the just ended Kelemogile and Mokgopsi bye-election was an indication of great improvement.
