Batswana must celebrate in style -Mathumo

15 Aug 2016

Kgalagadi District commissioner, Rapetse Mathumo,  has told Tsabong residents that a they have every reason to celebrate the country’s 50th independence in style.
Mathumo said this on August 11 where multitudes thronged Tsabong main kgotla to join in the celebrations marking 50 days countdown to independence day.
He said when Botswana attained independence in 1966, there was virtually nothing to write home about but things have since changed as there are notable developments both in infrastructure and education country wide.
Mathumo said the country’s democracy has also come of age adding that Botswana was the envy of most countries.
He said people of Kgalagadi should be proud of the improved road networks that were in the district explaining that in the past when they wanted to go to Lobatse or Gaborone, it took them weeks and or even months but that has changed now.
The district commissioner said it was paramount for Batswana to recognise and appreciate efforts made by the forefathers who ensured that Batswana enjoyed the fruits of democracy equally.
“You should know that the BOT50 crew intends to make sure that we will be celebrating our 50 years of independence united and proud,” he said.
He pointed out that there will be different activities such as football games and beauty pageants across the district which will be used for fund raising to facilitate celebrations in the district and implored those who can, to take part in such activities.
Kgosi David Toto of Tsabong  applauded those who heeded a call to come in large numbers to commemorate the 50 days leading to independence.
He said it is clear by their attire that they recognise the importance of the day.
Kgosi Toto reminded his people that they must uphold the peaceful and loving nature of Batswana that nations across the world know them of. ENDS
