Lady Khama trust has good year
14 Aug 2016
Chairperson of the Lady Khama Charitable Trust (LKCT) says this year has been the trust’s most successful fund raising year with over P5 million donated so far
Following the trust’s family fun day and urban obstacle course over the weekend, Mr Dale ter Haar said they were now left with the Lady Khama Cup to be hosted billed for October.
“For the family fun day and urban obstacle course, we managed to raise P200 000 - P300 000 and we shall know for sure after we calculate and have an exact number of how much was raised,” he said.
One of LKCT’s main objectives for 2016-2017 was to identify, design, build and equip some pre-school classrooms in rural communities.
The importance of early childhood development (ECD) programmes was well documented, but there remained an acute shortage of early learning centres.
It was only recently that government developed a capacity to focus on pre-schools.
Therefore, through partnerships, Mr ter Haar indicated that their aim was to build a number of these ECD centres nationwide.
Mr ter Haar said, through a partnership with Shona Quip, LKTC committed to purchase 15 specialised and customised wheel chairs for disadvantaged children annually.
“We are happy to announce that the first batch of four wheel chairs have been delivered and fitted to the allocated children and a further six are on their way,” he said, adding that it was important to note that each child was assessed and measured by a qualified physiotherapist and a report submitted and approved before the purchase of any chair.
Mr ter Haar applauded the people and organisations involved with the family fun day and urban obstacle course for their continued work in putting some dignity in Batswana’s lives.
He indicated that through these partnerships and fund raising activities, they have been fortunate to support non-profit organizations that help people with different issues.
“We share in the vision of dignity for all Batswana and we hope that for years to come we will continue to receive such support,” he said.
He indicated that the trust could not help everyone who was in need of assistance.
“I want to take this opportunity to also thank other trusts and charitable organisations that are involved in the same line of work we do and appreciate the little that they do,” he said.
“I am grateful for the support we have received over the years and I want to tell everyone involved with the trust that they are not doing this for me but rather to improve the quality of life for those that are less fortunate,” he continued.
LKTC was registered and launched in 2002 by President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama in honour of his late mother, Lady Ruth Khama.
The objective was to continue her charitable works, which she devoted much of her life to.
The trust continued Lady Khama’s legacy by raising funds and making annual donations to core beneficiaries that had a historic connection with Lady Khama as well as once off donations to projects that supported the trust’s mandate. ENDS
