AFM promotes sport in church
09 Aug 2016
The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church recently organised a football and netball tournament at Molepolole Sports complex with the aim of promoting sport in church.
The tournament dubbed Med Plus AFM attracted participants from the church’s fbranches in Tlokweng, Gaborone, Mogoditshane and Molepolole.
Speaking in an interview, sports administrator, Stephen Keagakwa, said the tournament had been running for 10 years since 2006.
He said the church had realised immense interest in sports by youth through the games.
He also highlighted that the tournament had produced talented players such as Phondo Keimetswe who plays for BDF IX as well as several players who play in the first division league.
Keagakwa nonetheless said they would like the tournament to grow in status and attract many spectators.
William Motereko of Gaborone AFM said they resolved to start the tournament after they realised that there was no platform where youth could interact despite the fact that they had traditional activities within the church such as annual conferences.
He reiterated the fact that since the church had a responsibility to make a difference in the community, the youth took advantage of this tournament to spread the word of God at its various games.
He stated that they had realised unity among youth since the tournament started as well as behavioural change and fortified relationships.
On the side of netball, Barati Nkokonyane said the games helped mould a lot of young girls in terms of acceptable behaviour.
The football tournament ended with Gaborone AFM emerging victorious after beating Tlokweng with 5-4 on penalties after a one all draw in the finals while the netball tournament ended with Tlokweng beating Molepolole 24-13.
The games were sponsored by Med Plus Medical Centre. Ends
