02 Aug 2016
Senior Superintendent Peter Gochela of Maun police has expressed concern about “unacceptable conduct” of some drivers who end up causing unnecessary road accidents.
He said they have established that 95 per cent of road accidents are due to errors of drivers. He expressed his concern in an interview that most drivers end up losing control of their vehicles thus causing accidents which could have been avoided.
He revealed that 99 per cent of the accidents are recorded within the town noting that the situation was worrisome. Senior Superintendent Gochela noted that on average, they charge about 50 to 70 drivers on a day during their operations.
He attributed the cause of the accidents in town to traffic congestion noting that Maun have no good roads and yet the traffic had increased.
This follows an accident that took place at Sedie ward where a Toyota Corolla collided with Toyota Mac along the Sir Seretse Khama road and claimed one life.
The police chief said the Toyota corolla was heading to town while the Toyota Mac was going the opposite direction. He said the Toyota Mac which was overtaking hit the other vehicle on the side and veered off the road.
The accident happened around 12 am and the driver of the Toyota Corolla who was alone in the car sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial hospital where he later died.
Senior Superintendent Gochela said the deceased, 33 was a taxi driver and originate from Maun. To mitigate the situation of unacceptable conduct of drivers, police have embarked on road operations.
