Khama spurs on Team Botswana
26 Jul 2016
President Lt. General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama says Team Botswana has potential to do well at Rio 2016 Olympics because the country has made great strides in sport.
Speaking during a send-off ceremony organised for the team in Gaborone on July 25, President Khama highlighted that Botswana has developed from a sporting novice at independence into a strong competitor on the world stage.
Therefore, he urged the team to compete strongly and represent the country with pride.
“When we started competing at the Olympic Games, we were one of the least competitive countries. At our maiden appearance in Moscow in 1980, none of our athletes made it beyond the preliminary stages. Fast forward to 2012, not only did we have athletes in the finals, but we also won our first Olympic silver medal,” President Khama said.
The team comprising athletics, swimming and judo stars was also handed national colours. He stated that Botswana was reaping rewards of an investment in sports development.
“Our commitment and investment in sport over the years coupled with the robust development systems in place have resulted in our sportsmen and women moving from mere participation to being strong competitors on the world stage.”
The President warned the team to compete in good spirit, preserve the good name of the country, and stay clear of doping.
The Olympic Games will commence in Rio de Janeiro on 5 August and ends on 21 August.
Team Botswana head of delegation, Moses Moruisi assured President Khama that the team would represent the country to the best of their ability and thanked the country for its support.
Botswana National Olympics Committee president Negroes Kgosietsile said they were satisfied with preparation for the games adding that they intend to surpass the silver medal won at London 2012. Ends
