Home affairs ministry faces staff shortage countrywide

21 Jul 2016

The Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu, says his ministry has noted staffing limitations of most of its offices across the country.
Mr Batshu was responding to a question from Ghanzi South MP, Mr Christiaan De Graaff.
To address this situation, Mr Batshu said his ministry “is in the process of operationalising the recently approved structure to ensure alignment to the mandate and responsiveness to service needs.”
The establishment for Ghanzi township offices, the minister said stood as follows; Department of Immigration and Citizenship has a staff complement of six immigration officers and three support staff as per the establishment, whilst Department of Labour and Social Security has a staff complement of four labour officers and six support staff.
Additionally, he said Department of Civil and National Registration Regional (CNR) had a staff complete of five registration officers and three support staff as per the establishment, whilst Department of Gender Affairs had a staff complement of one Gender officer and one temporary poverty eradication officer.
“One position of Gender Officer is vacant and being recruited for,” he added.
Given the current workload at Departments of Immigration and Citizenship and that of Labour and Social Security, the minister said ‘the staff complements are adequate to provide services in the Ghanzi district.’
However, he said his Ministry was experiencing limitations of manpower at Departments of Gender Affairs and CNR to adequately cover the district.
Mr De Graaff  had wanted to know whether the minister was aware that Ghanzi Township office was understaffed and what were the plans to address the situation. ENDS
