BDF accident victim laid to rest

19 Jul 2016

Thousands of mourners gathered in Tonota on July 16 for the funeral of Botswana Defence Force (BDF) employee, Private Oteng Mokalake.

BDF commanding officer III medium artillery regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mothata Makgasane, said Pvt Mokalake died in an accident during a training session at Ntwetwe shooting range on July 6.

He said the accident occurred while they were at the artillery guns shooting course together with other five colleagues when the bullet they were using failed to fire, exploded and killed him leaving the other two badly injured.

The injured duo was admitted at Gaborone Private Hospital (GPH) while three others were admitted at Gweta hospital with minor injuries and were later released.

Lt Col Makgasane described Pvt Mokalake as a true warrior who loved and respected his job, worked hard with due diligence and never dragged his feet or wanted special treatment when in line of duty.

He said Pvt Mokalake’ journey in the army though short-lived was impressive and recognised by his superiors.

The deceased joined the BDF on February 26, 2015 where he went for training at Pandamatenga for six months and was posted to Mogoditshane barracks on the III medium artillery regiment section. In February this year, he was sent to training at II artillery brigade headquarters (Eastern Military Garrison) at Selebi Phikwe where he was based during the time of his untimely death.

The family elder, Mr Koolopa Mokalake said Pvt Mokalake  was humble, loving and caring for everyone and loved children.

He said his brother’s death came as a surprise and he was expecting better things from him because he was the breadwinner.

“Private Mokalake was the pillar of strength for our family. It is very sad that he left the world at such an early age when he had just started working for himself,” he added.

He expressed condolences to colleagues, friends, parents and family, saying they should be strong and have faith in God to heal.

His friend, Mr Orapeleng Makgane said it was sad for him to say goodbye to his friend as they had just started a football team together, which he believed was going to instil a sense of togetherness for the youngsters of his ward in Tonota.

He said the deceased soldier believed so much in the team they had formed as he had love for people around him, loved peace and believed in giving other people second chances to improve.

Mr Makgane added that their friendship came long way back when they were young and his death came as shock and at a time when they were to enjoy their youth.

The deceased left behind his father, mother and elder brother. ENDS
