Permanent Secretary to the President (PSP), Mr Carter Morupisi, says education can help loosen the grip of poverty on individuals.
He said this at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of special education unit hostels at Moroka Primary School on July.
Mr Morupisi, also the school’s patron, said government had resolved to do everything possible to ensure that no child was denied opportunity to receive education by life’s circumstances.
Thus, he called on the nation to note that children with disabilities deserved to receive quality education so that they too could stand a better chance of escaping the grip of poverty.
He said it was sad that at the moment such children, who went to Moroka Primary School, had to attend school from different villages on a daily basis.
On another note, Mr Morupisi appealed for collaboration by all stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.
He, however, commended donors who had pledged their support for the project for their dedication to making positive impact on the lives of Batswana despite unfavourable economic situation under which they were operating.
For his part, Moroka ward councillor, Mr Egbert Tshandu, said construction of hostels was proof of the spirit of compassion that Batswana had over the years become anonymous with.
He noted that companies and individuals had come on board to ensure success of the project was also evidence of their recognition of the importance and value of education as well as the right of every individual to receive it.
Cllr Tshandu also called on locals with different construction skills to volunteer to render their expertise during the construction period.
Kgosi George Moroka urged those tasked with construction of hostels to regularly apprise the village leadership of progress so that if challenges cropped up, they could be addressed speedily.
He also implored residents to note that they too had a role to play in terms of helping in monitoring of the project.
Coordinator of the disability office at the Office of the President, Mr Thomas Motingwa, said about P900 000 had so far been raised for the project, which was expected to cost just over P1.3m. ENDS
