Ministry tackles school water woes

19 Jul 2016

There are no plans to drill a borehole for Mmadinare Senior Secondary School which has a daily water demand of 680 cubic metres, according to the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources.

The school is supplied from the village’s water treatment plant which produces a daily yield of 2 194 cubic metres.

The village on the other hand requires a daily supply of 2 610 cubic metres, which means that the supply from the water treatment plant is inadequate for the combined demand of the village and the school.

Mr Kitso Mokaila, the minister responsible for minerals, energy and water resources recently said Water Utilities Corporation would connect Mmadinare to the Selebi Phikwe water treatment plant as a measure to address the water supply deficit in the village.

“The designs for this project are complete and the corporation is still sourcing funding for the project,” Mr Mokaila said recently.

He was responding to a question in Parliament from Mmadinare MP Mr Kefentse Mzwinila who wanted to know if he was aware that the village shared its water supply with the school.

Mr Mzwinila had asked the minister to consider drilling a borehole and water recycling to supply the school.

“My ministry has no plans to drill boreholes for schools. It will be noted that institutions are encouraged to drill boreholes for themselves in consultation with the Water Apportionment Board,” minister Mokaila responded.

He also said there were no immediate plans to recycle water from Mmadinare Senior Secondary School. ENDS
