Botswana Police Service through the South Central Women Network has donated a four roomed house to the Balebetse family at Raserura ward in Mochudi.
When officially handing over the house on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Mr Keabetswe Makgophe said as the police they have the community and social responsibility to lend a helping hand to the people that they serve.
He said since President, Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama launched the Presidential Housing Appeal initiative it is the responsibility of all to answer the call to help house those who are in need.
Mr Makgophe said as the police they found it fit to help the family as they needed extra rooms to house themselves.
He said through the police women’s network in collaboration with social and community development, they identified the family and upon assessment they decided to build them a house.
The police commissioner further said Vision 2016 implores them to be compassionate and caring and this was one way of showing they care as the police.
Mr Makgophe added that they are also eradicating poverty which will help the family live a dignified life and no one will be tempted to get into crime.
When giving the overview of the project, Divisional Commander South Central Mr Matthews Letsholo said the south central women’s network decided to embark on a task to identify someone they can assist in 2015.
He said when the family was identified they then decided to build a house for the family especially after realising that the family has grown but they lived in a small house.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Letsholo further said the house began to be constructed in September of 2015 and took nine months for it to be completed.
He said the total construction cost amounts to more than P200 000 and money was raised through contributions from the police officers and private companies and individuals who gave out of their good will.
Mr Letsholo said they are thankful of all those who made it possible for the house to be completed and handed over to the family.
The beneficiary, Ms Nthonyana Balebetse was overwhelmed with joy and thanked the police for building a house for her family.
When giving a vote of thanks Member of Parliament for Mochudi West constituency Mr Gilbert Mangole asked the family to care for the house donated to them out of love.
He implored the children of Ms Balebetse to change their minds about life and turn things around for their own good.
Mr Mangole said the family’s life has been changed and they should hold on to the blessing with all they could as they have been taken out of poverty and given a better and dignified life.
Besides building a house for the family, Botswana Police also fenced the yard, connected electricity and reconnected water while the old house was refurbished through the help of Mochudi Brigade.ENDS
