Police camp earmarked for refurbishment

10 Jul 2016

The refurbishment of Peleng police camp has not benefited from the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) due to budgetary limitations.

This was said by the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi when responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Ghanzi North, Mr Noah Salakae.

Mr Kgathi said the Peleng police camp police was built in the pre-independence era, and that some of the houses were roofed with asbestos because it was the building material of choice then.

He however said the camp was among police stations earmarked for refurbishment under the current financial year.

“As at May 20, 2016 the Department of Buildings and Engineering Services (DBES) has completed the scoping of the refurbishment of the houses, and they are now working on the tender documentation.

The project is estimated to start in quarter three of 2017/17.

The scope of the refurbishment includes removing the asbestos roofs and improving the drainage system,” he said.

Mr Salakae had asked the minister to state when the police camp houses in Peleng, Lobatse were built, and if he was aware that many of the houses were built from asbestos with poor drainage system.

He also wanted to know whether the minister would propose their maintenance under the new Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP). ENDS
