Ministry warns residents of stray livestock

The community around Mosu in the Central District has been sensitised to be vigilant of stray livestock reported to have been found around the area.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said her ministry had been informed about “erratic observations of groups of stray livestock in and around Mosu.”
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, she said the cattle were said to be wild and seemed not to have been vaccinated.
Ms Tsireletso said the Central District Council met with the Kgosi of Mosu in April 2009, after receiving the report but could not identify the stray animals. She said the animals were reported to have moved to Makgadikgadi pans around 2010-11. She urged members of the community to be vigilant and to separate their livestock from the stray ones.
“Failure to control these stray livestock may lead to a spread of diseases and also pose a menace to the public,” she said.
She said the Central District Council would carry a surveillance of water points from July 11-15 and that the stray animals would be killed if found.
The MP for Boteti East, Mr Setlhomo Lelatisitswe had asked if the ministry was aware of stray animals reported to have been seen around Mosu since 2009.
He also wanted to know what the Matimela Act prescribed as the time frame for identifying and auctioning stray animals, what problems the failure of acting on matimela by Letlhakane office could pose to the community and when the issue would be attended to. Ends
