04 Jul 2016
Kgosi Thatayaone Makaba of Goora Segotshane ward in Kanye has applauded the Minister of Agriculture Mr Patrick Ralotsia for inculcating a farming culture in the growing minds of learners in the Southern District and beyond.
Kgosi Makaba said when welcoming the minister during a kgotla meeting he addressed in Kanye recently.
This came after Mr Ralotsia also Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kanye North constituency rewarded six former Seepapitso senior school students who did well last year in the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examinations with a cow each.
Kgosi Makaba said the gesture would go a long way to reinforce a learning culture within the school’s catchment area and inspire many others to work hard on their studies hoping to also reap the benefits.
For his part, Mr Ralotsia, a teacher by profession, explained that he had always had the idea way before he became a political representative.
He said he used to award learners who had passed with 75 per cent and above in their studies during his time as head teacher and education inspector with a view to motivate them to work hard. This time around, he said he was rewarding learners who had passed with 46 points and above.
The minister said the object of the initiative was to sow seeds of farming in the district. Mr Ralotsia has thus encouraged parents to stand up for the education of their children. He explained that the idea was to show commitment as opposed to affluence. He said some cows were donated for the cause by farmers and thanked them for supporting the initiative. ENDS
