Ngamiland NGOs plead for government support

26 Jun 2016

Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have pleaded with government to assist them financially in order to execute their mandate appropriately.

They made this plea at their meeting with the MP for Maun West, Tawana Moremi, recently in Maun. The meeting was organised by Ngamiland Council of Non-Governmental Organisation (NCONGO).

Nhabe Museum and Okavango Artist Association chairperson, Ompatile Sebuelo, said they were faced with many challenges including lack of funds in their day to day operations.

He therefore called on the government to consider including NGOs in the national budget for the benefit of the community they served.

He said museums were supposed to be spearheading the preservation of culture of Ngamiland people but currently all community museums had been closed.

Sebuelo pleaded with Maun West MP to table a motion in parliament seeking for museums to be granted funds.

He said it was time for dikgosi, district commissioiners, council and landboard secretaries to be opted as ex officios of museum boards as this would enhance their operations.

Sebuelo said with local support, Ngamiland community could be sensitised on what was being done at the museums and how they could teach young ones on culture by taking them to the museum.

However the MP advised NGOs to support each other on issues of concern by working collectively so that when they raised their concerns they did so as acollective. Ends
