Kgari Sechele suspends classes

22 Jun 2016

Things came to a stand still today (June 22) at Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary in Molepolole when a group of students destroyed school property and assaulted some members of staff.

Some students went berserk after one of their own was punished for one of the earlier incidents.

In the two earlier incidents, one student assaulted a staff member with a catapult and in a separate one, a Form 4 student was allegedly stabbed and consequently hospitalised.

Kweneng regional director, Mr Benson Rauwe, confirmed the incident saying they were shocked by students’ behaviour. He said the school management and relevant authorities will investigate and identify perpetrators in order to apply appropriate action.

He said though the incident affected this week's programme, teachers should be commended for remaining calm and showing restraint when dealing with indisciplined students.

Mr Rauwe, however, warned that unruly behaviour would not be tolerated, adding that management will not run the school fearful of students. He implored teachers not to be derailed on their core mandate of imparting knowledge.

For his part, Kweneng District commissioner, Dr Temba Mmusi, said teachers were forced to stop lessons to protect lives and property. He said such kind of incidents would not be tolerated.

He assured teachers that all efforts will be made to protect them and property from any threat or abuse by students. He said, though there were a series of events leading to the mayhem, he was still to be appraised with all details of what happened.

Meanwhile, students were sent back home during lunch and were instructed to return to school tomorrow (June 23) with their parents for a meeting to chat a way forward. ENDS
