KDC engages contractors
22 Jun 2016
Kgatleng District Council chairperson Mr Mpho Morolong said they have engaged refuse contractors who started their work in June this year.
Briefing full council session on June 20, Mr Morolong said due to an increasing number of people coming forward to register for waste collection services especially in Bophirima, Boseja Central, Pilane and Mosanta North council wards, Council had additional contractors.
Mr Morolong said clean-up campaigns have started in earnest throughout the district in preparation for the Botswana 50th independence celebrations.
He noted that the aim of the campaigns was to ascertain that as they celebrate the 50th anniversary, it should be done in a clean and healthy environment.
Mr Morolong also appealed to councilors to spearhead clean up campaigns that had been organised in their respective wards and encourage the communities to take up an active role in the events.
Cllr Morolong said it was encouraging to hear that some councillors have already started spear heading the clean-up campaign committees.
Concerning the landfill, Mr Morolong lamented that the upkeep of the Pilane landfill was a major concern in the district, adding that there was no provision for the maintenance of the facility.
He said the fire that broke out at Pilane Landfill on April 4 posed a challenge to firefighters as it was difficult to move around to put it off because the landfill is full.
The council chairperson said this resulted in the temporary closure of the site and the public were advised to use sites at Dikwididi and Mmathubudukwane.
He added that the fire at the site was still smoldering and the fire department continued to monitor the situation. ENDS
