Official calls for introduction of cabs in Serowe

22 Jun 2016

Alcohol and substance abuse campaign coordinator for Serowe region, Ms  Malebogo Motsokono, has appealed  to transport operators to consider introducing cabs in Serowe.

Speaking during  road safety family fun day in Serowe recently, Ms Motsokono  said introduction of cabs would reduce fatal road accidents perpetuated by alcohol and substance abuse.

She said the public would use cabs rather than  their vehicles from drinking places especially at night as such road safety would be improved.

Serowe police station road traffic officer, Mr Christopher Mpofu said from January to June this year, they had registered 174 drunken driving offences, while they registered 332 in 2015 and 392 in 2014 from same offense.

Mr Mpofu also appealed to pastoral farmers to kraal their livestock at night saying livestock roaming at night worsened fatal road accidents statistics.

He also advised those driving at night to be more vigilant.

He stressed that avoiding prevalent offences, such as drunken driving, over speeding and unlawful overtaking, would save lives claimed by traffic accident.

For her part, Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) station manager in Serowe, Ms Gofaone Kavezedi, stated that road safety family fun day had been introduced to help improve the level of road safety understanding amongst children and parents in a fun environment.

She said the noble move was premised on the fact that facilities were basic foundational social units in all human communities around the world.

“Informed individual within informed families are the core on an informed society”

The fun day, she said, would encourage parents within communities to take an interest in matters of road safety, share road safety messages and information with their children.

She said such day is important because it strengthen the relationship between DRTS communities and its stakeholders. ENDS
