WUC certain of Jwaneng supply

02 Jun 2016

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has assured Jwaneng residents of continuous supply of potable water.

The corporation’s general manager for Kanye management centre, Mr Matthews Sebina, made the promise during a full council meeting in Jwaneng recently.

Mr Sebina said his office was not expecting any dry-up in the near future as it continued to draw water from Magagarape boreholes.

He said Jwaneng and Sese needed 3 510 and 2 327m3 of water respectively on a daily basis and the corporation was able to meet the demands.

“We are certain of continuous supply because we buy water from the mine, treat it and sell it to the residents and the mine as well,” he added.

Mr Sebina, however, highlighted that the corporation was experiencing problems with sewerage services.

He said due to the hardness of the water that deposited white lime in the pipes, the sewage lines were getting worn out faster than expected.

The other problem was that items such as blankets and papers, blocked pipes, leading to spillage of drains.

He admitted that the sewerage system had been a problem because of lack of resources to replace it, adding that Jwaneng had a flat terrain, which rendered the flow of unclean water difficult.

However, Mr Sebina said upgrading of the sewage lines had been included in the corporation’s emergency project list.

He pleaded with the council to move that a trade affluent agreement be part of the trading license, where the trader would state how they would dispose of used water before a license could be issued.

When councillors aired their grievances concerning high water bills, Mr Sebina explained that every bill was unique and should be addressed individually.

He therefore urged the public to visit WUC offices for any queries. Ends
