Councillors blame squatting on delayed plot allocations

01 Jun 2016

Maun Administration Authority (MAA) councillors have called on the Tawana Land Board to produce progress report pertaining to land allocations.

The councillors blamed suspension and delay of plot allocations for mushrooming of squatters. Their contentions followed the remarks made by the MAA chairman Mr Gaokgakala Letswee who called on the local authorities to address the issue of illegal squatters.

“Illegal land settlement continues to be a problem especially in Maun, there is significance prevalence of squatters in Shashe, Sedie and Moeti,” he said.

Mr Letswee urged the l leadership to guard against proliferation of illegal squatters saying squatting had repercussions on planning processes and district resources.
However, Gxhabara councillor, Mr Vepauni Moreti said the Tawana Land Board’s delay in plot allocations was a cause for concern.

Mr Moreti argued that people’s interest was to be allocated plots in Maun not the neighbouring places as the Land Board has  been doing.
Boro/Senonnori Councilor Mr Kenson Kgaga remarked that the Tawana Land board has been stuck on allocating 2006 plots applications over a long period.

He pointed out that he did not believe the notion of shortage of land as alluded to by the Tawana Land Board.
Botswana, he said has a small population of two million and has abundance bare land and some as forest reserves.

Mr Kgaga said timely plot allocations by the Land Board would surely reduce the escalating issue of illegal squatters. Ends
