Maun water situation remains challenge

31 May 2016

The Maun water situation remains a challenge, therefore the flow of the Tlhamalakane River is closely monitored, the Maun Administration Authority chairperson Mr Gaokgakala Letswee has said when officially opening the sub council. Mr Letswee said the Maun water shortage was worsened by the drying of the Tlhamalakane River which fills the Borolong Surface water Treatment Plant.

“The treatment plant accounted for more than two thirds (600m3/day) of Maun water supply,” he said.

However, Mr Letswee said the Tlhamalakane River was expected to recharge before the end of this month, according to hydrology experts. Reports have suggested that the floods were in Boro near Maun. Mr Letswee said the other challenge for Maun water supply was that of storage capacity which was a third of the present demand.

Furthermore, Mr Letswee said 14 boreholes were completed in May 13 as opposed to the completion date of February 2016.
“Water qualities tests conducted on the boreholes indicate that the two boreholes can be considered for connection while other five would require further treatment and three are still awaiting water quality results,” he said. Ends
