SMMEs show growth in Southern District

31 May 2016

Entrepreneurship within small, medium and micro sections of the economy has shown growth in the Southern District, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela, Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) chairperson has said.

He told councillors in a full council meeting in Kanye on May 30 that in the recent years, commercial dryland farming had been one of the major economic activities supported by the availability of land and financing.

He said proximity to the mining town of Jwaneng also created some effect and boosted the region.

Mr Dibeela said trade such as transport, accommodation and primary education needed to be exploited further in order to create employment in the district.

“Though we encourage our people to venture into business, you must note that at the same time we are mandated as council to enforce bye laws and statutes delegated to the district council’’, he said.

He said compliance was satisfactory, but the business community must be encouraged to abide by all statutes.

However, he said KAA had registered beneficiaries, saying the statistical information for the sub-district was 1 784 permanent destitute persons, 118 temporary destitute persons, 1 588 needy students, 1 313 orphans and 49 home based said care.

Mr Dibeela said there was an increase in the number of destitute persons and decrease in the number of needy students as most of registered needy students who were doing form three did not proceed to Form 4 and some completed Form 5.

He said the sub-district had been allocated funds amounting to over P1 million by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for the construction of 18 needy families during the 2016/17 financial year.

He said the size and type of houses to be constructed will be determined by the family size, adding that 60 beneficiaries are still on the waiting list and the department continues to receive new cases. Ends
