Hip-Hop alive in Kachikau
30 May 2016
Kachikau, a small village approximately 90 kilometres from Kasane has produced a talented 25 year-old hip hop artiste, Kabelo Moyenga who is looking forward to a brighter future through music.
The soft spoken, enthusiastic young man has so far proved to be a force to reckon with when it comes to Hip Hop music. Going by the stage name, Skinny Boi said his love for music started when he was young at the cattle post.
He initially enjoyed local music, especially of the likes of Jeff Matheatau and Franco of the kwasa kwasa fame and he reiterated that singing came as a blessing to his life after he bumped into a US hip-hop artiste Ja-Rule tape while at home.
At that time, his grandparents owned an Omega radio which gave him the opportunity to listen to the tape and by that time he did not know who Ja-Rule is and the kind of music he played.
He was inspired by the rhythmic flow of the artiste’s lyrics and the way important messages are conveyed to the general public through music.
Deep down, Skinny Boi believed he always had something to share with people, especially the youth and the only way he could reach out to them is through music.
He had to nurture his skills and talent in order to be well conversant with hip-hop music, thus he collaborated with other talented hip-hop artists, the likes of Bling Bling, Yung Amazeing and Tayboz, who is currently his producer.
In 2014, he realised he has a lot of talent and started writing songs almost daily until he went to Drumsonic Studio where he recorded his first single featuring Yung Amazeing.
The hit single sold moderately well and he was motivated to improve his publicity through shows.
He has not yet released an album but has four hit singles which feature in local radio stations and this has boosted his music career positively because his fan base has increased dramatically.
Skinny Boi indicated that he once performed alongside the award winning MMP Family at Trekkers night club in Kasane.
He was also invited to showcase his talent at a Fashion show in Katima Molelo in the neighbouring Namibia.
The most influential track from his first single was ‘Ama go get it’ which translates to ‘I will never give up, I will keep on trying until success is within reach.”
The hit single has significantly improved his popularity amongst hip-hop lovers and the song truly dictates his future ambitions because currently he is the founder of the Annual Kachikau Ree Koo festival which is held during Independence celebrations.
He stated the event will be celebrated annually although he is still looking for sponsorship which can help him fulfil his ambitions.
Although he does not have a promoter, he has a Disc Jockey (DJ) and a producer who does all genres of music with a vision of promoting local talent. Ends
