29 May 2016
The Francistown Comedy and Poetry Night left comedy lovers begging for more on May 26.
Supported by Botswana Guardian, Business Botswana and Adansonia Hotel, it was the third show by Major Movers Comedy and Crystal Matters.
The show started in 2014 and saw a considerable growth as the first show had only local comedians and poets but the second show brought in Mashabela Galani and renowned poet Mohlouoa Ntsasa both from South Africa.
Francistown poets, Obokeng ‘Chalisto’ Kagiso and Koketso ‘Finoh’ Marumo slugged it out with the heavy weights with their well recited lines before another Francistowner, Desire Itani took to the stage to open for comedy.
Itani, though not yet a household comedian, gave his best but seemed to hand the baton as the show grew in status.
The master of ceremonies, Mushi Rasegojwa, never let the crowd to feel the chill of the night.
Performance by Boniface ‘Roy’ Phetogo set the pace teasing his mentor Oefile ‘Mawee’ Mokgware with a bottle of wine as a token of appreciation, sending the crowd into laughter.
Mawee, who is an award winner of the President Contemporary Comedy Award, rocked the show ending it with his musical story telling signature before giving way for the man of the night, Mongezi ‘Tall-Ass Mo’ Ngcobondwane from South Africa.
Tall-Ass Mo took the crowd on a journey of his upbringing that was typical of any African working class urban dwellers that has the grandmother as head of the extended family.
Although the showed some growth, organisers decried lack of sponsorship, which they said deprived the industry of growth and deterred young business people from taking initiatives to explore markets as there is no help and support necessary to survive harsh competitive world of business.
The organisers further said such events in Gaborone saw huge support, which helped in publicity and taking their product to people to create awareness and demand consummate with the show and its reception.
They however, thanked all those who supported them in this show and said they will continue to try to involve other business people in future. Ends
