Organisers of the Otse Mountain Hiking and Health Exposition were on May 28 ecstatic about the turnout for the event.
Tens of young people and few adults took part to reach to the 1 491 metres high Otse mountain peak, which is cited as the country highest.
The secretary of Otse BOT50 steering committee, Benjamin Noga in an interview said the turnout was highly satisfactory and it suggested that future events could be more successful.
He said the turnout showed that people were health cautious and they had also heeded the message to partake in this year’s Independence Day celebration preparations.
He promised that more events of this nature would be held as a build-up to the 30th September and highlighted that their wish was for the residents to reach the independence celebrations healthy.
Kgosi Mothusi Tsetse of Otse also paid tribute to Otse youth who outnumbered the elders saying this was a transformation for the village.
He said youth as leaders in waiting, should be seen to be active in village developments so that they learnt from an early age.
The Otse elder said it was critical that young people to have basic health information which would enable them to make informed decisions in life.
In addition, Kgosi Tsetse also said health plays an important role in the lives of the community hence the need for the BOT50 steering committee to promote healthy living.
He said the event went along with the vision 2016 pillar of a united and proud nation as events of this nature bring people together in a relaxed atmosphere.
In addition, Kgosi Tsetse applauded the BOT50 steering committee saying they were making progress in preparations for the Independence Day celebrations in the village.
He said this could be a result of bringing both young and elderlies together to prepare for the independence celebrations, and added that they had to seek the expertise of retired officers who hail from the village to guide in the preparations.
Apart from climbing the mountain, the residents were treated to health chats and testing by Communities Acting Together to Control HIV, Otse Home Based Care and the village clinic. Ends
